Lanark is beautiful for blooming judges
However, some others let the town down.
Every year, the small but dedicated band of volunteers making up the Lanark In Bloom group pull out all the stops to dandify the Royal Burgh in preparation for the annual visit of the Beautiful Scotland competition judges.
The judges confer bronze, silver and gold awards to the various Scottish towns and villages taking part in the competition, the top award having tangible value in the tourism publicity the win attracts.

Hide AdIn recent years the town has, mainly thanks to Lanark in Bloom, performed respectably with silver awards.
However, last year there was disappointment at a bronze award, To try to recapture silver status, Lanark in Bloom’s chairman Ernie Romer appealed through the Gazette to all Lanarkians to do what they could to get their part of the town tidied up or even specially decorated for the arrival of the judges.
They duly arrived for the tour of inspection last Wednesday and Ernie was well pleased with their reaction.
“Fingers crossed for when the results are announced next month,” he said.
